The Jail System

The Alaska corrections system is unified, with DOC facilities housing inmates who would be in county jails in most other states.

The Prison System

The Alaska Dept.of Corrections provides all statewide corrections services. The Department operates 13 facilities, some housing both detainees and sentenced prisoners, with a staff of approximately 1,300. In 2007, DOC was responsible for 5,167 prison and jail inmates.

The Community Corrections System

The Alaska DOC supervises 6,416 adult probationers and 1,544 parolees.

The crime rate in Alaska is about 8% higher than the national average rate. Property crimes account for around 83.6% of the crime rate in Alaska which is 3% higher than the national rate.
