The Jail System

Iowa has 97 jail facilities and 99 counties with a rated capacity of 4,193 inmates. Jail inspections and standards compliance is provided by the state Dept. of Corrections.

The Prison System

The Dept. of Corrections, with 2,883 staff, operates 9 facilities and uses 21 community centers to manage 8,732 inmates at the end of 2007. The Department's operating budget was $360.4 million in 2008.

The Community Corrections System

State, executive branch agencies in the eight judicial districts of Iowa supervised 22,776 probationers and 3,546 parolees in 2007. Agencies are state funded, each has a local board of directors.

The crime rate in Iowa is about 22% lower than the national average rate. Property crimes account for around 89.9% of the crime rate in Iowa which is 20% lower than the national rate.
