Overview of Illinois's Correctional System Illinois

The Jail System

There are 90 jail facilities in the state's 102 counties with a capacity to hold nearly 20,000 inmates. Cook County facilities hold nearly 9,800. The state DOC manages a jail inspection and standards compliance program.

The Prison System

The Illinois Dept. of Corrections houses 45,215 inmates in 37 facilities and camps, in addition to 7 transition centers. The Dept. has 14,200 employees. (Incarceration rates were not available from the Bureau of Justice Statistics. Estimates have been inserted.)

The Community Corrections System

70 county probation agencies (some multi-county) supervised 142,790 probationers in 2007. State oversight and some funding comes through the Admin. Office of the Courts. The DOC's Community Services Division supervised 33,354 parolees.
2007 Crime Rate for Illinois
The crime rate in Illinois is about 7% lower than the national average rate. Property crimes account for around 84.6% of the crime rate in Illinois which is 10% lower than the national rate. The remaining 14.3% are violent crimes and are about 12% higher than other states. The following graph shows how Illinois compared to the rest of the states.
