The Jail System

There are 105 counties in Kansas and 98 jail facilities with a rated capacity of 6,053 inmates. There is no formal standards or jail inspection program in the state.

The Prison System

There were 8,696 inmates in Kansas prisons in 2007. The Dept. Corrections has 10 facilities and 3,240 employees. The DOC budget for FY 2008 was $296.6 million.

The Community Corrections System

Probation departments in the state's 31 judicial districts supervise 16,131 probationers in 2007. The DOC's Division of Field Services supervised 4,842 parolees. The DOC also funds and oversees the Community Corrections Act programs (mostly intensive probation supervision services).
2007 Crime Rate for Kansas
The crime rate in Kansas is about 10% higher than the national average rate. Property crimes account for around 89% of the crime rate in Kansas which is 11% higher than the national rate.
