The Jail System

Mississippi has 82 counties with 94 jail facilities. The rated capacity of the jails is 10,173. The MS Dept. of Public Safety inspects jails, standards compliance is voluntary.

The Prison System

The Dept. of Corrections managed 22,431 inmates at the end of 2007. The DOC has 3,621 employees and operates 3 prisons, 11 regional facilities, and contracts with 6 private prisons. The agency's budget for FY 2008 was $348.1 million.

The Community Corrections System

The DOC's Community Corrections Division has 500 employees. The Division supervised 21,623 probationers and 2,015 parolees at yearend 2007.
