The Jail System

There are 100 counties and 106 jail facilities in NC. Their combined rated capacity is 17,634. Jail inspections and standards compliance are enforced by the NC Dept. of Health & Human Resources and by the NC Dept. of Justice (training standards).

The Prison System

The Dept. of Correction managed 37,970 inmates in 2007. The DOC operates 78 adult and juvenile facilities, contracts with 3 private facilities, and has nearly 19,300 employees. The department's annual budget is approximately $1.2 billion.

The Community Corrections System

The DOC's Div. of Community Corrections supervised 111,446 probationers and 3,311 parolees in 2007. Field offices are alligned with the 43 judicial districts of the state. The Division administers grants for community corrections programs in 93 counties through the Criminal Justice Partnership Program.
