The Jail System

There are 38 jail facilities in the state's 33 counties with a rate capacity of 9,319. There is no jail inspection or standards program.

The Prison System

The Corrections Department managed 6,466 inmates in 2007. It operates 6 prisons, contracts with 6 private facilities, and has a 2,324 employees. The Department operating budget in FY 2007 was $262.3 million.

The Community Corrections System

The Department's Probation & Parole Division supervised 20,774 probationers and 3,527 parolees in 2007.
2007 Crime Rate for New Mexico
The crime rate in New Mexico is about 15% higher than the national average rate. Property crimes account for around 84.9% of the crime rate in New Mexico which is 12% higher than the national rate.
