Overview of New York's Correctional System New York

The Jail System

NY has 62 counties with 83 jail facilities. The combined rated capacity of the jails is 40,182. The NY State Commission of Correction inspects jails and enforces standards compliance.

The Prison System

The Dept. of Correctional Services managed 62,623 inmates in 2007, and operates 69 facilities with a staff of 31,500. The inmate count has declined from 71,691 at midyear 2000. The agency's operating budget for 2009 was $2.4 billion.

The Community Corrections System

Local, executive branch probation agencies, with oversight by the Div. of Prob. & Corr. Services, supervised 119,963 probationers in 2007. The Division of Parole supervised 53,669 parolees.
