Overview of Pennsylvania's Correctional System Pennsylvania

The Jail System

Pennsylvania has 67 counties and 73 jail facilities with a rated capacity of 31,335. The state DOC conducts jail inspections and enforces compliance with jail standards.

The Prison System

The Dept. of Corrections managed 45,969 inmates in 2007. The DOC operates 27 prisons, 14 community facilities, a boot camp and has a staff of nearly 15,000.

The Community Corrections System

County probation departments in 65 counties, and the state Bd. Of Prob. & Parole in 2 counties, supervised 176,987 probationers in 2007. The Board's Bureau of Parole Services supervised 78,107 parolees.
2007 Crime Rate for Pennsylvania
The crime rate in Pennsylvania is about 26% lower than the national average rate. Property crimes account for around 85% of the crime rate in Pennsylvania which is 28% lower than the national rate.
