The Jail System

Texas has 254 counties and 268 jail facilities with a combined rated capacity of 71,962. The TX Commission on Jail Standards inspects jails and enforces standards compliance.

The Prison System

A 9-member Bd. Of Crim. Justice oversees the TX Dept. of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). Texas had 171,790 prison inmates in 2007. TDCJ operates state prison and jail facilities and contracts with private facilities. TDCJ has 38,316 staff.

The Community Corrections System

122 Community Supervision & Corrections Departments (local, judicial agencies) supervise 434,309 probationers. TDCJ's Parole Division supervised 101,748 parolees in 2007.

The crime rate in Texas is about 19% higher than the national average rate. Property crimes account for around 89% of the crime rate in Texas which is 21% higher than the national rate.
