Overview of Washington's Correctional System Washington

The Jail System

Washington has 39 counties and 54 jail facilities with a combined rated capacity of 10,264. There are no jail inspection or jail standards programs in the state.

The Prison System

The Dept. of Corrections managed 17,772 inmates in 2007 and has a staff of 8,124. The DOC operates 13 institutions, 16 work / training facilitites, and 2 pre-release centers.

The Community Corrections System

118,885 probationers were supervised by the DOC's Community Corrections unit and local probation offices in some jurisdictions. The DOC also supervised 13,017 parolees in 2007. Washington abolished parole in 1984. The DOC has 83 community corrections field offices.
