Overview of Indiana's Correctional System Indiana

The Jail System

There are 93 jail facilities in the state's 92 counties with a combined capacity for 15,763 inmates. The state Dept. of Corrections inspects jails and enforces compliance with state standards.

The Prison System

The Indiana Dept. of Correction held 27,132 inmates in 22 state facilities at the end of 2007. The Dept. has over 8,700 staff providing adult and juvenile services.

The Community Corrections System

County probation departments, with some state oversight, supervised 126,562 probationers in 2007. The DOC supervised 10,362 parolees and administers Community Corrections Act programs in 55 counties.
