A Two-Year Release Follow-Up of Federal Offenders Who Participated in the Adult Basic Education (ABE) Program

The author examines the background of the basic education programs, the makeup of the participant sample and how they viewed the usefulness of the programs, program targeting, grade gains and readmission rates, and post release outcomes. He finds that the majority of offenders found the programs very useful, that participants who complete the programs realize good literacy advancements, and that offenders with above average grade-level gains also experienced a reduction in re-admission rates. He concludes that education for basic literacy will continue to be a necessary but not a sufficient condition for the successful reintegration of offenders. Accession Number: 014935
