Women in Prison: Transition of District of Columbia Female Felons to the Federal Bureau of Prisons

The National Capital Revitalization and Self-Government Improvement Act of 1997 required the transition of female felony offenders to the Bureau of Prisons. This document reports on that transition. As of June 1999, 218 D.C. female felony offenders were in BOP's custody. Twenty-seven inmates were assigned to BOP facilities more than 500 miles from the District of Columbia due to medical, security, or safety concerns. The BOP offers a variety of parenting, educational, and job-training programs at all of its facilities. The private contract facility for D.C. female inmates will open during the year 2000 in Philipsburg, PA. Accession Number: 015339
