Right-Sizing Justice: A Cost-Benefit Analysis of Imprisonment in Three States

The median social costs per year per male offender for New York, New Mexico, and Arizona were, respectively, $31,866, $26,486, $25,472. Using these figures the authors arrived at the following conclusions: further prison expansion will experience less cost-effectiveness due to diminishing returns; the imprisonment of drug-only offenders is not cost-effective; and community costs associated with increased incarceration will also increase.
