A K-GOAL Audit of the Department of Corrections, Part I: Assessing Staff Safety and Salary Issues

Staff shortages in Kansas prisons are covered by relief staff, operational staffing, or overtime. Staffing levels have been experienced that compromise staff safety, with a correctional officer being raped. In general, correctional officers are paid less in Kansas than in most neighboring states, a nearby federal facility, and some of the larger local law enforcement agencies. Lower salaries are contributing to turnover and recruitment difficulties. Corrections officers use hand-held radios and body alarms most often. One in four correctional officers surveyed said their safety had been threatened due to faulty communications equipment. Accession Number: 015458
