Federal Criminal Case Processing, 1998: With Trends 1982-98

Statistics that describe defendants processed at different stages of the federal criminal justice system are provided. Some of the report's highlights follow. Of those investigated for possible violations of federal law, 32% were suspected of a drug violation, 36% for public-order offenses, 27% for property offenses, and 7% for violent offenses. Due to the sentencing Reform Act of 1984, prison incarceration rose from 54% in 1988 to 71% during 1998; drug offenders incarcerated rose from 79% to 92%. Federal community supervision included: 59% on supervised release, 35% on probation, and 6% on parole. Accession Number: 015552
