Managing Older Offenders: Where Do We Stand?

A comprehensive profile including problems and unique needs of older offenders is provided. This report is divided into the following sections: institutional offenders' personal characteristics, criminal history, offense severity (more likely to be incarcerated for sexual and violent offenses than their younger counterparts), sexual offense history, and suicide risk potential; risk and needs management of older offenders in the community; and the needs of institutionalized older offenders such as medical care, adjustment to imprisonment, programming, prison environment and violence, peer relationships, family relationships, and parole concerns.
