Becoming a first line supervisor involves many changes and challenges. This 28-hour course, originally delivered as a distance learning event, introduces ideas, insights, and perspectives that will immediately impact supervision effectiveness. Modules include: building blocks of supervision (what is a supervisor and supervisory competencies); personal competencies (vision and values and principled behavior); organizational context (mission and culture and working with stakeholders); supervisory styles; problem solving (critical thinking, decision-making, and conflict management); effective communications (the dynamics of communications, listening and responding, and written communication); encouraging performance (assessing and coaching performance, counseling and discipline, and performance appraisals); and action plan.
