This workshop looks at principles of effective intervention and how these principles can be applied to controlling and changing offenders' behavior. Sections include: treatment v. punishment; what works -- overview of treatment effectiveness; criminal behavior and predictors of risk; overview of classification and assessment; the Correctional Program Assessment Inventory (CPAI); targets for change and the responsibility principle; introduction to motivational interviewing; overview of cognitive restructuring; supplemental reading; and samples of four risk assessment instruments. Lesson plans from the training program entitled "Changing Offender Behavior to Promote Public Safety" (NIC accession no. 016160) also address topics found in this course.
