The following are examined in this report: probationer characteristics; compliance with conditions of probation; predictors of non-compliance; and factors of success between probation and parole compared. Sections include: executive summary; problems for this enquiry; methodology; requirements for persons on probation; probation supervision and decisions about revocation -- interviews with probation officers; probation case characteristics; measures of probation compliance and individual risk of non-compliance; variables predicting compliance and violation; comparison of probation and parole caseloads on 24-month follow-up; conclusions; and recommendations. There was a re-arrest rate of 31% for those people still on probation.
