Federal Criminal Case Processing, 1999: With Trends 1982-99

Statistics that describe defendants processed at different stages of the federal criminal justice system are provided. Some report highlights include: 32% of those investigated for possible federal law violations were suspected of a drug violation, with 38.9% for public-order offenses, 24.1% for property offenses, and 5% for violent offenses; prison incarceration rose from 54% in 1988 to 72% during 1999; the incarceration rate for drug offenders rose from 79% to 92% during the same period; and federal community supervision included 61.8% on supervised release, 32.9% on probation, and 5.3% on parole.
