Jail administrators in small and medium-sized jails must have knowledge and skills in a wide variety of areas to oversee operations and manage specific functions. Each module of this program focuses on specific administrative responsibilities
and tools, including:
- Action planning.
- Using jail standards.
- Managing risk.
- Developing and assessing policies and procedures.
- Determining staffing needs.
- Managing the workforce.
- Managing inmate behavior.
- Developing a fire, safety, and sanitation plan.
- Managing the budget.
- Administrator’s role outside the jail.
- Assessing jail operations.
Audience
This program is open to jail administrators or an agency team composed of the agency chief executive officer (such as the sheriff) and the jail administrator or the jail administrator and the assistant jail administrator from small and medium sized jails. The jail administrator, who is the primary audience for this program, is defined as the person who directs the day-to-day operations of the jail and is responsible for the overall management of jail operations.
