Sharing Gang Intelligence / Bridging the Gap: Corrections - Police - Educators

On June 25, 2008, the National Institute of Corrections will host a live 3-hour satellite/Internet broadcast to address sharing gang intelligence among corrections, law enforcement, and education professionals.

View schedule and satellite/Internet viewing instructions Gangs are a growing national problem that all elements of the public safety community must effectively manage. Collaboration and information sharing are key to managing gangs effectively and safeguarding public and institutional safety.

A diverse panel of experts will address various processes, methods, technologies, partnerships, and information sharing programs related to gangs and their potential networks of intelligence. This broadcast will be of interest to police, corrections, military, and criminal justice educational agencies. Discussion topics will include the following:
  • Value of correctional intelligence.
  • Available technologies and good intelligence sharing programs.
  • How gang intelligence is gathered in prison and jail and the correctional intelligence cycle.
  • Recruitment of terrorists in prison or jail.
  • Police/Corrections partnerships.

This broadcast is available without charge to any agency or facility nationwide with access to the Internet or a satellite dish or downlink (both analog C-Band and digital KU-Band transponders). If your agency does not have its own satellite dish, check to see if a local college, federal prison, or hotel in your area has a downlinked meeting room. If you cannot find a local site or need information on viewing the broadcast using the Internet, please contact Ed Wolahan for assistance.

Participating sites that register by June 23, 2008, will be able to download satellite coordinates and Internet access information as well as the Site Coordinator and Participant Guides, and recommended reading materials from NIC’s web site at www.nicic.gov. Local site coordinators will download and make copies of the Participant Guide for each participant. It is suggested that participants download the
recommended reading material for their own information. Coordinators are strongly encouraged to convene their groups at least one hour before broadcast time and to continue discussions after the broadcast.

Audience

Professionals working at all levels and in all areas of adult and juvenile corrections or inmate reentry are encouraged to attend. This includes: Federal law enforcement agencies, local police, military gang investigators, wardens and superintendents, administrators, prosecutors, gang associations and task forces, and individuals working in jails, prisons, and community corrections facilities, parole and probation, pretrial services, and detention centers.
